Three people were arrested this morning as plain clothes Pensacola Police detectives take to the streets to catch vehicle burglary suspects in the act.

From May 1 until today, there have been 91 vehicles reported as burglarized within city limits. The majority of them occurred to unlocked vehicles.

Also, at least four vehicles were reported stolen within city limits over the past month. All of them have been recovered; one was found in BaldwinCounty.

Around 2:30 a.m. today, plain clothes detectives arrested three people after they were caught burglarizing vehicles in the area of 15th Avenue and Scott Street.

            Arrested were:

            – Treniqua Hollinger, 19, of 3510 N. Ninth Ave., Pensacola.

            – Maurissa Atkins, 20, of 219 E. Highland Dr., Pensacola.

            – Maurice Atkins, 19, of 3510 N. Ninth Ave., Pensacola.

Each of the suspects was charged with nine vehicle burglaries, one residential burglary and possession of burglary tools. An investigation continues to determine if they were involved in other recent vehicle burglaries.

The suspects were arrested after a detective on an anti-burglary detail witnessed them breaking into a vehicle. Back-up officers were called and the suspects were then taken into custody. The suspects were in a vehicle that not been reported stolen. They tried to leave the scene and hit a tree on north side of Cross Street between 12th and 13th avenues. Hollinger was driving.

Also, additional warrants have been issued for a Pensacola man who is a suspect in multiple vehicle burglaries and vehicle thefts that have occurred within the past month in East and North Hill areas, Inverness and EastPensacolaHeights areas.

The Pensacola Police Department initially had a warrant for Tonjas Cornielus Dixon, 20, of Pensacola for one count each of burglary, vehicle theft and larceny, and two counts of criminal mischief.

This morning, additional warrants were issued for Dixon for eight additional counts of vehicle burglary, four counts of vehicle theft, two counts of grand theft, three counts of petit theft, and two counts of credit card fraud.

In addition, warrants have been issued for Lucas Jenkins, 21, of Pensacola. He is wanted on eight counts of vehicle burglary, four counts of vehicle theft, two counts of grand theft, three counts of petit theft, and two counts of credit card fraud. Jenkins and Dixon are believed to have been committing the burglaries together.

Investigations into recent vehicle burglaries continue and additional charges are possible on all suspects.

Chief Chip W. Simmons said one of the easiest ways to prevent vehicle burglaries is to lock vehicle doors. The majority of recent vehicles burglaries have not involved forced entries but rather by just lifting door handles.

Simmons offered the following tips in addition to locking doors:

            – People should remove guns and other valuables from vehicles.

            – People should be aware of their own property and that of their neighbors.

            – Report suspicious activity to appropriate law enforcement agencies.

Anyone having information on locations for Dixon or Jenkins is asked to contact the Pensacola Police Department at 435 – 1900 or Crime Stoppers at 433 – STOP.

One woman received minor injuries in a 2-vehicle crash that occurred just after noon today on North Ninth Avenue and knocked out power to a number of locations in that area.

The crash occurred around 12:10 p.m. in front of CiCi’s Pizza, 7145 N. Ninth Ave.

Officer Dan Bell said a Toyota Camry driven by Erica Greene, 23, of Pensacola was northbound on Ninth Avenue in the right-hand lane when a vehicle in front of her slowed and she swerved to the left to avoid it.

Bell said when Greene swerved, her vehicle collided with a Cadillac driven by Janet Hanson, 62, of 5069 Avocet Lane, Pensacola, which was northbound in the left-hand lane.

Hanson then over corrected her vehicle, which traveled across Ninth Avenue, down a ditch and struck a power pole, which snapped at its base. The car then went into a parking lot in front of CiCi’s, hit an oak tree and came to rest about 60 feet away, Bell said.

Power was out from approximately Winn Dixie north to Keating Road. A Gulf Power crew was working to restore power in the area.

Hanson received minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Bell said Greene was charged with improper lane change. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

The third of four suspects involved in a December 2012 homicide has been arrested.

Deontrez Levon Kitt, 27, was taken into custody without incident around 2:30 p.m. today at a residence in the 5300 block of North Blue Angel Parkway. He was charged with capital murder on a grand jury indictment.

Meanwhile, police continue searching for Anthony L. Wilson Jr., 29, address unknown. He also is wanted on a grand jury indictment for capital murder.

Two other males – Deavis Saulsberry, 24, and Trevon Nelson, 28, both of Pensacola – have already been arrested and charged with capital murder for the December 24, 2012, kidnapping and murder of Torrance Hackworth, 32, of 1321 North J St., Pensacola.

Around 2:45 a.m. on December 24, the suspects approached Hackworth when he arrived at his residence. They then forced him into the apartment, bound him with duct tape and held him in the apartment.

One of the males awakened Hackworth’s 36-year-old girlfriend and their four children, ranging in age from four to 10, and ordered them at gunpoint into the living room. As all six residents were held hostage, the suspects ransacked the house, demanded money and stole various items.

When Hackworth insisted he didn’t have any money because he had bought Christmas presents for the children, the suspects said they were going to kill him. The suspects then beat and struck Hackworth several times with a firearm in front of the woman and children before dragging him outside and putting him into the truck of the woman’s vehicle, which they used to flee the scene.

Approximately two to three hours after the abduction, the woman’s vehicle was found partially submerged at the SandersBeach boat launch. Hackworth was shot several times and his body was found December 26 in a vacant lot in the 1600 block of North S Street. The incident is believed to have been drug related.

Agencies that assisted the Pensacola Police Department with the investigation were the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Gun Crime Response Team, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and State Attorney’s Office.

A Pensacola Police officer received minor injuries Wednesday night after he jumped into PensacolaBay to rescue a man who had jumped or fallen into the water.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. at Palafox Pier, 997 S. Palafox St.

A witness told police the 20-year-old man jumped off the pier and into the water about 10 feet below; however, the man told police he fell into the water, said Officer Matthew Coverdale.

Police responded to the area after receiving a 911 call from a bystander. Officer David Rogers threw the man, who was holding onto a large piling and struggling against choppy water, a rope in an effort for him to tie it around himself. But when the man couldn’t do so, Officer Eric Hubley jumped into the water.

Hubley managed to get the rope around the man and then he and other officers, who were overhead with the rope, kept the man away from the sea wall until a Pensacola Fire Department boat arrived.

Fire department personnel threw Hubley a life preserver, and he used it to get the man and himself to the rescue boat where they were pulled to safety. Both Hubley and the man suffered minor scratches from barnacles attached to the piling and sea well.

The man was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

A Pensacola man was arrested early this morning and charged with child neglect after he left a 10-year-old boy unsupervised in an unlocked car while he drank alcohol inside a downtown business.

Gerald L. Chatwood, 48, of the 100 block of West Detroit Boulevard was arrested around 2 a.m. today.

Officer Jeffry Cain was dispatched to the area of Palafox and Romana streets after some citizens complained about young children being left unsupervised in the area. Cain found one of the boys sleeping inside an unlocked car on the northeast corner of Palafox and Romana. The child told Cain he had been with Chatwood and when he told him he was tired, Chatwood suggested he sleep in the vehicle.

Cain found Chatwood a short time later in Hopjacks, 10 S. Palafox St. Another 10-year-old male was with him in the business.

Chatwood, who had been drinking, told Cain he wanted to take the 10-year-old boys to New York Nicks to play pool with him but he left that location because the kitchen had closed. He then decided to go to Hopjacks, and when one of the boys told him he was tired, Chatwood told him to sleep in the vehicle and lock the doors.

He then took the other boy into Hopjacks and began drinking.

The two boys were placed in protective custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families and Chatwood was taken to the Escambia County Jail.
