William Johnson

A man who shot at a store employee Tuesday afternoon after they had a disagreement inside the business has been arrested.

William Johnson, 24, of 525 N. DeVilliers St., Pensacola was arrested this morning. He was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Citgo, 1101 W. Cervantes St.

Detective Pat Bradley said Johnson was inside the business when he got into an argument with a store employee – Ahmad Al Selwadi, 31 – because Al Selwadi refused to allow him to sell drugs on the property.

Johnson then left the business and went across E Street. When Al Selwadi went outside to smoke a cigarette several minutes later, the suspect pulled out a handgun and began firing at him. Al Selwadi ran back inside the store; he told police he heard four to five shots but was not injured.

A warrant was issued for Johnson’s arrest after he was identified during the investigation by members of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Gun Crime Response Team. Bradley is a member of the response team.

Two males were arrested Thursday after an investigation determined they planned and participated in a home invasion that occurred earlier this week.

Kendall Harmon, 20, of 5710 W. Jackson St., Pensacola and Keontre Forbes, 16, of Pensacola were each charged with grand theft, grand theft of a firearm and home invasion/robbery with a firearm.

The incident occurred between 4:45 and 5:10 p.m. Wednesday at 2219 W. LaRua St.

The victim – Stephanie Murray, 30 – told police Forbes was visiting her and asked for a glass of water. While she went to get it, Forbes let Harmon, who had a handkerchief over his mouth, into the house, said Detective Pat Bradley.

Harmon then ordered Murray and Forbes onto the floor at gunpoint. Murray said Harmon then ordered her and her dog to go into a bedroom where she locked the door, Bradley said. When she no longer heard the suspects in the house, she exited the bedroom and police were called a short time later.

Bradley said the suspects took some electronic items and a 9mm handgun. The stolen items have not yet been recovered.

Multiple jewelry items worth more than $69,000 had been stolen from a residence within an approximate 1 ½ month period.

Detective Candace Miller was assigned as the lead detective on the grand theft case, and wasted no time in contacting victims, potential witnesses and developing a suspect. She searched pawn records and developed a suspect plus found multiple suspicious transactions.

She also searched variations of the suspect’s name and found additional suspicious pawn transactions. Armed with all of this information, Detective Miller was able to identify and locate all but three of the stolen jewelry items.

Within just a few hours, Detective Miller was able to find nearly all the stolen jewelry and had obtained sufficient probable cause to initiate an affidavit on the suspect.

Because of her outstanding work on this case, Detective Candace Miller was named Officer of the Month for August 2013.

It started as a traffic stop and ended with a major drug seizure.

Officer David Huhn stopped the vehicle after seeing the driver commit a traffic violation. While talking with the driver, Officer Huhn detected the odor of fresh marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle.

Officer Huhn continued his investigation, and found approximately one ounce of high grade hydroponic marijuana. The investigation soon expanded after the driver said he would be willing to talk with narcotics investigators.

And from there…detectives executed a search warrant on a residence where they seized approximately one pound of marijuana, codeine, suspected hits of LSD, suspected tablets of Ecstasy, a loaded firearm, and over $5,000. The approximate value of drugs seized from the residence was $3,220. Numerous charges were filed on a man who lived at the residence.

Because of his willingness to take additional investigative steps and for developing a rapport with the driver he initially stopped, Officer David Huhn was named Officer of the Month for September 2013.

A team of assessors from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) will arrive November 5 to examine all aspects of the Pensacola Police Department’s general orders, policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services, said Chief Chip W. Simmons.

The Pensacola Police Department has to comply with approximately 260 standards in order to receive accredited status.  Many of the standards are critical to life, health and safety issues.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency members and the general public are invited to offer comments to the assessment team.  A copy of the standards is available through Capt. Paul Kelly, the department’s Captain of Administration, at 850 – 435 – 1854 or via email at pkelly@cityofpensacola.com.

For more information regarding CFA or for persons wishing to offer written comments about the Pensacola Police Department’s ability to meet the standards of accreditation, please write: CFA, P.O. Box 1489, Tallahassee, FL  32302, or email info@flaccreditation.org.

Kelly is the Accreditation Program Manager for the Pensacola Police Department. He said the assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar agencies. The assessors will review written materials; interview individuals; and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed.

The CFA Assessment Team Leader is Master Officer Tammy Farnham of the Stuart Police Department. Other team members are Lieutenant Juan Torres of the Clearwater Police Department and Lieutenant Jerry Warriner of the Altamonte Springs Police Department.

Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to receive accredited status. The Pensacola Police Department’s accreditation is for three years.

Verification by the team that the department meets the Commission’s standards is part of a voluntary process to gain or maintain accreditation – a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, Simmons said.
